St. Matthews is a growing and thriving small church family with many children. In building a strong and healthy community we realize the great importance to teach and foster the faith of our very youngest members. Over the past few years we have worked hard to build a team of Sunday school teachers, all volunteers from our parish, who work on a weekly basis to grow, develop and nurture the faith of our children. We are using “Living the Good News” for grades 1-12, a revised lectionary based curriculum which uses a variety of story reading, craft, interactive play and music to deepen the learning experience. Because we have realized the special needs of the preschool and kindergarten aged children we have been working to build a Godly Play classroom for this age group. A completely interactive learning environment with very hands on learning tools. We will continue to work over the next few years to complete the development of this classroom. To help connect the families of the Sunday school children in our community we have also started Sunday school sponsored family events. The Pentecost Picnic and the Fall Festival Lunch with Halloween Party are just two of the events we have put on. Our next family event will the St. Nicholas celebration, look for details in the coming weeks. Vacation Bible School rounds out our year by giving the children of St. Matthews a summer reminder of the Sunday school experience in a summer camp format. Again using a inactive based curriculum with music, story reading, craft and games. This can be the high light of our year with the great memories that come from the songs, games and stories learned.
